The book will be launched at Curtin University by Professor Steve Mickler and commented by Professor Baden Offord and Dr Thor Kerr Southern Screens: Cinema, Culture and the Global South adopts a transversal south-to-south approach to the study of screen culture across national and cultural territories. It examines conditions by which traditional and new media works and experiences participate in the generation, sharing and circulation of new knowledge that is both southern and about the South.

Rather than freedom of speech, I will focus on freedom of broadcast as an essential element of clean democracy as one of the five speakers at the Bersih5 event in Perth. My talk will review recent discussion in Australia on racism, the power of establishment media and the challenge to section 18C of the Racial Discrimination Act. What can the Bersih movement learn from contemporary Australian experience?
